Future of Youtube outdoor channels

Does outdoor content have a future on Youtube?  I was reading an article by Brian Kevin questioning if people would watch hiking videos on Youtube.  He discusses the growing following for those willing to share their experiences across the world and slowly comes round to losing himself to the same guilty pleasure.  There is an audience out there keen to view outdoors content online but just how big is it, what are they watching and why?

Audience size

Youtube now has 1.5 billion active users every month, a 50% increase from 2013.  With 80% of 18-49 year olds watching at least one video in an average month, the size of the audience is massive.  Sports and outdoor pursuits regularly fall into the top searched for content as users look for inspiration for their own adventures or occasionally just for pure escapism.  There is a huge demand out there for new innovative channels and new ones are being uploaded daily to keep up the supply.

Why watch Youtube?

There are a number of reasons outdoor videos are useful to watch on Youtube.

  • Research – conquering a new summit peak or hitting that mountain bike trail is so much easier if you know what to expect from the terrain and how best to prepare.  Watching someone else tackle the same challenges you are interested in trying out will help you get in the right mindset and avoid any surprises once you arrive at the location.

  • Gear reviews – watching reviews of products and equipment are a great way of finding out opinions and if the item could fill your needs.  Its good to contribute if you feel strongly about something you have used and feel passionately about its qualities, it might just help someone else make the right decision.  Buy once buy smart!

  • Inspiration – you don’t always know what goal to set next or where to travel to achieve it.  Watching others take on new challenges and achieve targets might inspire you to follow in their footsteps.  How to guides or checklists will also help make sure you are aware of what skills you might need to brush up on or equipment required to make any trip successful.
